⚠️What this calculator doesn't include

We focus on the upfront, one-time costs to get your license. These ongoing or situational costs aren't in the estimate above:

🛡️
Auto insurance
$1,500–$4,000+ per year. You can't legally drive without it. Teen drivers add $1,000–$3,000/yr to a parent's policy.
🚗
Vehicle for the road test
You provide the vehicle for your road test (driving school cars rent for $50–$100 if you don't have access).
🔄
License renewals
States renew every 4–8 years; renewals usually cost $20–$60 each.
📚
Optional study courses
Paid permit-test prep apps run $20–$50. The official state handbook is free.
🪪
Replacement / duplicate licenses
Lost license replacement runs $5–$30 in most states.
🚦
Traffic-court costs
Tickets, tolls, and other ongoing driving costs are separate.

📐How this calculator works

Each state row pulls the actual fee schedule from its corresponding state guide on this site, sourced directly from the state's official DMV/MVC/DOL/Secretary-of-State website and verified periodically. We then apply the inputs you choose (age bracket, REAL ID, driver's ed, behind-the-wheel hours, and retest attempts) to estimate your specific situation.

For driver education and behind-the-wheel costs, we use national typical-cost ranges (these vary heavily by provider and aren't set by the DMV). Retest fees are estimated at $5–$35 per attempt based on the most common state ranges.

For the canonical, fully-itemized fee schedule with state-specific notes, see your state's detailed cost page (link in your estimate above).
